Yeah, they are different but...
The window frame is almost exactly the same, just larger on the 8 series.
They use similar tricks of upper and lower body lines to visually lengthen the shape which makes them look shorter.
The both have a lower, lower body line that helps slim down their mid-sections.
The BMW uses the wraparound taillight to finish off the hip line, while the Mustang uses a small, separated extension of the upper body line to continue into the tail.
Made this gif to help me decide if they are too close.
After seeing them together, they are di fferent enough, I guess.

I fully clocked this 5 seconds after seeing the car, I rationally acknowledge it, I think even BMW acknowledges it ( it’s mentioned in Jonny Lieberman’s MT writeup). And yet I’m still sure I will love the 8-series a million times more in person than any Mustang I’ve seen.

Americans and comparing every expensive car to the Mustang/Vette...
This has all those things too! Gasp! Except the Hoffmeister Kink, but that’s such a well known and used design trait, is it really worth mentioning? In fact this does have the wrap-around taillight, so it’s virtually identical to the 8-series then!
I’m calling Ford, they’ll want to know about this plagiarism.
My point here is that design is almost always derivative and consistent. A good looking large 2-door coupe is likely to share proportions and some elements with a bunch of other cars of the same ilk. It doesn’t make the cheapie Mustang akin to a car 4 times its price.

Yeah, they are sort of the same kind of vehicle so it makes sense that they share some look/feel DNA.
Speaking purely from a exterior design POV, I actually think I like the Mustang more. It looks so much more intentionally muscular, whereas the BMW is much more smoothed over and gets a little melt-y looking to me. I’m not even a Mustang fan.
It is larger than the Mustang, so maybe it’s scale helps when seen in person.

Fur ther proof that the Accord Coupe is the archetype of modern 2-door t ouring design.

That looks very different to the 8 series or Mustang, so besides being intentionally obtuse, I’m not sure your point? (No b-pillar, ground effect-like side skirts, comparatively short hood and overhangs. Cama r o looks different, SL looks different, A5 looks different )
All the German cars look like they carved a nice car out of a bar of soap and then used the bar of soap a bunch of times.
They are all just melted blobs.

It’s all in the greenhouse.

it’s interesting that the Mustang actually has a little less greenhouse and slightly longer lines than the BMW, rather than the other way around.

Well there is some Photoshop trickery happening t here. The BMW is overall larger than the Mustang. What you are seeing is a slightly scaled down 8- series vs the M ustang. 8 series has a longer wheelbase for example, but they are lined up in my gif above.
Was mostly looking at the over all proportions. and I feel like the larger size of the 8 will make me like it more in person that I do in pictures.

I said my point :P It’s easy but pointless to point out similarities in 2 designs, it doesn’t mean they’re the same or plagiarised.
And
that there’s a real
trope
on here of Americans
likening

I see a surprising amount of Stinger on the front of the 8 series .

Not sure it’s pointless. No more pointless than any other conversation on the internet/O ppo, right?
I mean, yeah designs are copied , but your saying people (Americans) are not allowed to have an opinion about it??

yep - not a bad thing, and the new 8 is beautiful, (though those BMW front fender side vents are starting to bug me a little ...)

After some thought, I think the main differentiator for me is that the Mustang’s rear wheels are too far forward for some reason. It looks like it hit a curb perpendicularly at full speed in reverse and the wheels where pushed forward but the rest of the car stayed the same. It’ll fall backwards and drag its butt if you floor it. Look at Wobbles the Mind’s Accord comment below and you won’t unsee.

The BMW looks better, but I did not recognize it.

The wraparound taillights also allow BMW to not have to place a side reflector somewhere on the body.

Not sure about archetype--but it’s definitely the least attractive of the 3.

Agreed. The S Class Coupe is BMWs target here by just cutting 15k under.

Wait: am I supposed to know what any of these cars is?
